Learn about the state of New York!

Here are two worksheet activities to help teach geography awareness on the state of New York . Students could work in groups and use re f erence materials to find the answers to Mrs. Waffenschmidt and her new puppy, Schnitzel’s, travels to the State of New York . I’ve found several great sites to help young people learn about New York City . * With all websites, please check them out to see if they are appropriate for your grade level.

Did you know?

New York was the first state to require license plates on automobiles

The oldest cattle ranch in the U.S. was started in 1747 at Montauk, L.I.

The first capital of the United States was New York City. George Washington took the oath of office in 1789 in Federal Hall.

Mapwork

Use an atlas or go to a website such as the following: Fact Monster

1. Name five states which border the state of New York

2. The city of Oswego is on which lake?

3. Plattsburgh touches this lake?

4. According to the map, which city is the furthest north?

5. According to the map, which city is the furthest east?

6. The cities of Kingston and Newburgh are near which river?

7. What is the capital city of the state of New York?

Where in the State of New Yorkis Mrs. Waffenschmidt and her new puppy,Schnitzel?

I know you love playing with your new rubber ball, Schnitzel, so I thought we’d start our travels to New York at the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The famous museum is located in the town of_____________. Oh, my, where is my camera? I see the state bird____________in the state tree____________and would love to have a photograph of both of them. Please, Schnitzel, don’t bark at the birds, you’ll scare them away before I can get a picture. From here let’s go see the famous caves of New York. The guide says that _______________were discovered by a farmer’s cow, named “Millicent”. Seems on hot summer days Millicent and her friends gathered near the opening where the cool air came out from below. Hmmm, did you know that the Dutch first settled what is now called New York ? They called it ___________ after the area was claimed for the Dutch by Henry Hudson in 1609. Schnitzel, let’s go see the highest mountain in the state. Called________it’s found in the Adirondacks, the state’s largest mountain chain. Let me get a photograph of you, Schnitzel, and the mountain peak which is 5344 ft. tall. Ok, it’s time to move along on our sightseeing trip of New York . Let’s go see the famous waterfalls near the border of Canada . Did you know that 200,000 tons of water go over ___________every minute? Amazing, don’t you think? Don’t worry about getting wet on the boat ride, they supply rain coats for people and I packed your own tiny purple raincoat! Schnitzel, I’d like to drive over one of the longest suspension bridges in the world before we leave this state. _____________is 4260 ft. long and connects Brooklyn with Staten Island. It was named for an explorer, who, in 1524, was the first European to sail in the New York Harbor . Since we are so close to New York City , let’s go take an elevator ride to the top of the tallest building in the city. At one time , ___________was the tallest building in the world! From the 86th floor, we can have a great view of the city and on a clear day see about 80 miles away! The guide over there told me that the building gets struck by lightning about 100 times a year! That’s.... shocking! He also told me that the original purpose of the building was to dock blimps! Time to leave one of the 13 original states and move along in our travels around the United States. You’ve been a very good puppy. Here are some extra dog treats for you!
